Turning Ideas and Insight into Action
Sunday was another jam-packed day for attendees at the 2008 NAMI National Convention in Orlando, FL.
Throughout the day, members cast their ballots for new NAMI board members and initiatives.
The eight symposia in the morning covered a wide range of topics, including:
- Evidence-based practices for children
- Recovery-focused services and community housing
- Quality care for racial and ethnic communities
- Consumer employment
- Mental healthcare for veterans
The symposia were followed by the Research Plenary: New Techniques for Early Detection and Prevention. The plenary focused on schizophrenia and the advances in genome studies to unlock the complex condition. Presenters included Edward Scolnick, M.D., director, Psychiatry Initiative, The Broad Institute; William Cook, M.D., director, Psychiatry Research, Maine Medical Center; and moderator Ken Duckworth, M.D., medical director, NAMI National.
The highlight of Sunday's seminars was Below the Neck: Physical Health and Mental Illness. This session concentrated on practical strategies for achieving better physical health as part of an overall plan for recovery and wellness.
In the afternoon, attendees chose from among 26 workshops and had a brief opportunity to catch their breath before two special evening events: a demonstration of the In Our Own Voice progam, and Sunday Night at the Movies: Depression, Out of the Shadows that was aired nationally on PBS on May 21st.
