2008 NAMI Convention: Day One Highlights

Friday, June 13

NAMI Convention Day 1Opening Day

The 2008 NAMI National Convention kicked off today in Orlando, Florida. NAMI members, leaders and others whose lives have been affected by serious mental illness began arriving at the Rosen Center for four days of learning, connecting and recharging for action.

The day's activities focused on networking and training for NAMI's grassroots leaders and advocates. Many attendees took part in one of the 11 different workshops that comprised this year's Leadership Institute. Topics included multicultural outreach initiatives, public relations and media, growing local affiliates, NAMI's new e-Join program, veterans, prison outreach, building consumer inclusion, NAMI on campus and more.

The day was capped off with a special session entitled New Research at NIMH and NIDA. The session shared new research initiatives aimed at improving diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and substance abuse. Presenters included Dr. Thomas Insel, M.D., director, National Institute of Mental Health and Dr. Nora Volkow, M.D., Ph.D., director, National Institute of Drug Abuse.
