Psychodynamic Therapies for Borderline Personality Disorder

Two types of Psychodynamic Therapies for Borderline Personality Disorder have been explored in treatment literature:

a.) Transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP), the approach of Otto F. Kernberg, M.D., and his colleagues, emphasizes the interpretation of the meaning for the client’s behaviors within relationships, most notably the relationship with the therapist.  TFP also emphasizes the importance of experiences of anger.

b.) Mentalization-based therapy (MBT), designed by Anthony Bateman, M.D., and Peter Fonagy, Ph.D., emphasizes the value of recognizing one’s own mental states (feelings/attitudes) and those of others as ways of explaining behaviors.
