NAMI Baltimore Releases Guide to Navigating the Criminal Justice System
NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore recently released “Beyond Punishment: Helping Individuals with Mental Illness in Maryland’s Criminal Justice System” a guide to navigating the criminal justice for people with mental illnesses and their families. The book explains how to interact with police and the court system, starting with the first encounter with police and concluding with probation and parole. It also offers guidance on the involuntary commitment process, how to avoid police involvement and a variety of miscellaneous information that may be necessary in interacting with the criminal justice system. While the book is meant to assist Marylanders, the information can be helpful for anyone caught up in the US criminal justice system. A copy of the book can be found on the NAMI Metropolitan Baltimore website. Readers can provide feedback on the book by filling out the survey at the end of the book, or by going to the Criminal Justice Resources section of their website.
