NAMI Submits Comments on Proposed Changes to the Social Security Appeals Process

December 21, 2007

NAMI has submitted comments to the Social Security Administration on proposed regulations amending the administrative appeals process that claimants with disabilities must go through in seeking eligibility for disability benefits (SSI and SSDI).  These comments raise a number of concerns related to the ability of claimants to submit additional medical evidence and could result in people with mental illness having to file multiple applications in order to qualify for SSI or SSDI.  NAMI comments are based on joint efforts with other national disability organizations through the Consortium for Citizens With Disabilities.
