The Voting Process

NAMI Affiliates in good standing (those with at least five paid members by April 9, 2011) and NAMI State Organizations may cast votes in NAMI elections. Each group may vote absentee or appoint a delegate or proxy to vote on its behalf. Individual NAMI members do not vote directly in NAMI's national elections.

NAMI State Organizations each get one vote in NAMI elections. NAMI Affiliates have "weighted votes" based on the number of members in the group as of 90 days prior to the election. The more members your group has, the more votes you get, ranging from 1 vote for groups of 5 - 50 to 10 votes for groups of 800 or more.

Individuals do not vote in NAMI's national elections, but all NAMI members have an opportunity to participate in the election process by helping to decide how your NAMI Affiliate or NAMI State Organization will cast its vote. Contact your affiliate and state organization leaders for more information about how and when they will be deciding how to cast your vote. Each NAMI Affiliate and NAMI State Organization chooses someone to serve as their delegate or proxy. That person will cast the ballot on behalf of the group.

Voting Packet

In mid-May, a packet of voting information, including the ballot, credentialing forms, a copy of the election issue of the Advocate, and instructions for voting will be mailed to each affiliate and state organization in good standing.

Members can begin convening now to consider the proposals and candidates before you. We urge you to join in this decision-making process!

Credentialing forms specifying who will serve as delegate or proxy for each group must be submitted by affiliates and state organizations to the NAMI National office by June 27, 2011.

Hear From the Candidates

You can hear the candidates online beginning in mid-May. Visit the Candidates' pages to hear a five-minute recorded speech. Convention attendees are invited to hear the candidates give live speeches on Wednesday, July 6.

Absentee Voting

NAMI Affiliates and NAMI State Organizations that wish to vote absentee may do so via official ballots that will be mailed in May. Absentee ballots are due to NAMI by June 27, 2011.

Onsite Voting

Voting will take place on Friday, July 8th at the NAMI Convention in Chicago. The NAMI convention program will include a map with the voting area clearly marked. Credentialed delegates/ proxies may vote between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Only credentialed delegates or proxies may cast ballots. All ballots must be returned to the ballot box by 6 p.m.

NAMI Affiliates and NAMI State Organizations that do not return voting credentials to NAMI by June 27, 2011 will be subject to onsite review.

Election Results

Results of the election will be reported at the NAMI business meeting on Saturday, July 9. Results will also be posted on
