Compartiendo la Esperanza

A group of Latino advisors came together in September 2010 to discuss the possibility of creating a program similar to NAMI’s Sharing Hope: Understanding Mental Health for Latino communities. Participants responded enthusiastically but discussed a myriad of cultural implications for adapting this template to a new community focus.

Kim Puchir, NAMI communications coordinator, provides a wonderful recap of the themes of this discussion as well as video messages from meeting participants in the NAMI Advocate article, The Leaders and the Bridge: Building a Grassroots Program for the Latino Community.

The Multicultural Action Center will focus efforts in 2011 on developing this program and updates will be provided in future issues of Recovery for All. Stay tuned!

National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month: July 2011

Named in 2008 in honor of the late NAMI advocate, Bebe Moore Campbell, the Multicultural Action Center has worked every year to make National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month grow. We were proud to be part of another wonderful nation-wide effort to boost awareness of mental health in diverse communities in 2010. Recaps of activities were featured in a previous issue of Recovery for All and more information can be found on the NAMI website.

It is our hope that 2011 efforts will be even bigger and better and we encourage Recovery for All subscribers along with all NAMI constituents to take part. Please join the Multicultural Action Center in celebrating this special month: spread the word, find partners in your community to collaborate on plans big or small or participate in national networking opportunities and educational presentations during July.

Updated resources for National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month will be provided in early 2011 and the Multicultural Action Center will offer suggestions on what you can do this year. Please watch for announcements of these updates and opportunities to get involved.

NAMI Convention 2011: July 6-9 in Chicago

The NAMI 2011 Convention is anticipated to be an inspiring, innovative and exhilarating four days in one of America’s great cities—Chicago. A program outline, updated regularly, is now available on the NAMI convention website. As plans for this annual event are finalized, we look forward to providing updates of the great offerings that will engage and appeal to diverse convention attendees in the coming months.
