Case Analyses for Abnormal Psychology: Learning to Look Beyond the Symptoms

By Randall E. Osborne, Joan Lafuze, and David Perkins

Review by Bill Broderick, NAMI Literature Committee

Case Analyses for Abnormal Psychology: Learning to Look Beyond the Symptoms
by Randall E. Osborne, Joan Lafuze, and David Perkins
(Philadelphia Psychology Press, 1999. 200 pages. Paperback: $26.95)

As its title suggests, this book is intended as a text primarily for advanced students of abnormal psychology.

The writing, though technical in places, is nonetheless clear.

Case Analyses includes case studies of people with 11 mental illnesses, including all the major ones. Before the text focuses on individual cases, early chapters emphasize the importance of, and techniques used in, diagnostic interviews as well as a brief review of the contents of DSM?IV categories.

The cases illustrate the importance of combining the biological approach of using medications and psychodynamic, cognitive, and/or behavioral approaches for optimal outcomes. The book may be particularly interesting to NAMI members wanting to learn how professionals are trained to deal with illnesses families and consumers are familiar with.
