University of Cincinnati Study: Why Minorities with Mood Disorders Face Dangerous Misdiagnosis

August 18, 2005

University of Cincinnati will conduct a four-year, national study to determine why African Americans and Latinos seeking treatment for mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder are often times misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. 

A misdiagnosis will result in inproper treatment and will significantly impede recovery.  The study hopes to recommed ways to correct the problem, though new education and assessment techniques.
