Recovery and Celebration
The final full day of the 2007 NAMI National Convention in San Diego, CA, began with seminars that reflected some of the variety of approaches to treatment and recovery within the NAMI movement. Topics included:
Physical health and mental illness
- Mental illness and the arts
- Innovative approaches to jail diversion and community re-entry
- Early identification of mental illness
- Multicultural inclusion
At the annual business meeting, in addition to welcoming new national board members, NAMI recognized the recipients of this year's Outstanding Media Awards and was addressed by Congressman Bob Filner of California.
The afternoon brought the ever-popular Ask-the-Doctor sessions, for direct question-and-answer time with expert physicians on eight different mental illnesses, as well as a final round of workshops.
One highlight of the day was the Spanish-language community forum, Aprendamos Juntos (Let's Learn Together). This open forum for the San Diego community featured presenters addressing mental health, education, support, and how to access services.
In the evening, attendees gathered for a Pool Party, closing the convention with an outdoor dinner, music, and dancing.
Thanks to all the presenters, volunteers, sponsors, staff, and—most of all—attendees who made this a convention to remember. We look forward to welcoming you to Orlando for the 2008 NAMI Convention, June 13 -17.
