New Resource on Veteran and Re-entry from the National GAINS Center

The CMHS National GAINS Center recently released a guide entitled, “Leveling the Playing Field: Practical Strategies for Increasing Veterans’ Involvement in Diversion and Reentry Programs.” The guide discusses three kinds of barriers that often inadvertently prevent veterans with a history of incarceration from participating fully (as volunteers, advisory group members, or staff) in jail diversion and reentry planning initiatives. These barriers include financial disparities; eligibility and access (i.e. to tour correctional facilities); and experiential differences and preparedness. The guide suggests that there’s a lot program organizers can do to address these problems, and suggests practical approaches to improving outreach, re-designing policies, and supporting veteran participants so that they can fully engage in diversion and reentry programs. Copies of  “Leveling the Playing Field” are available for download on the National GAINS Center website.

2010 National GAINS Center Conference

The 2010 National GAINS Center Conference will be March 17-19, 2010 at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida. The theme of the conference will be "Including Justice-Involved People with Mental Illness in Health Care Reform."   For more information about registration, travel arrangements and the program, visit the National GAINS Center website. The National GAINS Center is funded by SAMHSA’s Center for Mental Health Services, and is a resource and technical assistance center for planning and coordination among the mental health, substance abuse, and criminal justice systems.
