News and Announcements - April 2010

NAMI National Convention June 30-July 3rd

The NAMI National Convention is coming up, June 30-July 3 in Washington, D.C. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the nation’s capital and stay for the Fourth of July festivities! The conference will feature our popular CIT Special Networking Session, hosted by Major Sam Cochran, and a variety of other exciting programs. To learn more, visit the NAMI Web site

Criminal Justice Reinvestment Act Moving through Congress

On March 11, the Criminal Justice Reinvestment Act, introduced this winter by members of both U.S. House and Senate, was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee--the first of several steps towards passage. The Act would create a two-part grant program for governments to analyze criminal justice trends, develop policy options to address growth in the corrections system and implement and measure the impact of the policy changes. Model programs in Rhode Island and Texas have already shown that this type of analysis can dramatically reduce unnecessary spending. The bill must pass the full Senate, and be taken up by the House before it can be signed into law by the president. To learn more, go to www.justicereinvestment.org.

New Resource on Tailoring Law Enforcement Initiatives to Individual Jurisdictions

The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center in March released a new publication that discusses varying law enforcement responses to people who live with mental illness. Improving Responses to People with Mental Illnesses: Tailoring Law Enforcement Initiatives to Individual Jurisdictions is the result of a project supported by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice, and was conducted in partnership with the Police Executive Research Forum. It explores the program design process for a variety of specialized police response models, including crisis intervention teams, law enforcement/mental health co-response teams and case management approaches, that take into account such factors as jurisdiction size, demographics, mental health and law enforcement agency resources and relevant state laws. This new resources can be downloaded here. [http://www.consensusproject.org/jc_publications/tailoring_le_responses]
