NAMI Consumer Council Member at Large: Steve J. Miller
Steve J. Miller currently serves on the Consumer Council Executive Committee as member-at-large.
Steve found NAMI in 1997 after struggling with mental illness for 17 years. He attributes his recovery to new atypical medication and NAMI. NAMI gave him direction and a second chance at life.
Steve began his journey by joining a local NAMI group in his area. He was “hooked” immediately because it was the first time he experienced others who openly talked about mental illness.
Steve actively became a part of NAMI by joining his local board. Over time he became his local affiliate’s president, later the executive director, and was eventually asked to serve as his state’s consumer council representative.
Steve has taught or presented at several NAMI programs including peer-to-peer provider education trainings, and the family to family consumer class. Additionally, he has presented at several conferences and colleges around the country and has been featured on the television news, radio, and newspaper. He believes his story can give hope to peers and families that recovery is possible.
Steve feels very fortunate to be at where he is today and wishes the same for all those living with a mental illness.
