The 10 Most Common NAMI Editorial Mistakes

  1. Don’t say NAMI National, NAMI local or local NAMIs. Always use NAMI, NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates.
  2. It is email not e-mail.
  3. Use a.m./p.m. It is always lowercase, with periods (e.g., 10 a.m. not 10 AM). If a time is on the hour, “:00” should not be included (e.g., 3 p.m. not 3:00 p.m.).
  4. Commas should not be placed before the conjunction (e.g., “and;” “or”) in a series (e.g., Symptoms of depression include feeling tired, poor appetite, thoughts of death and feeling hopeless.).
  5. Phone numbers should be listed in this style (555) 555-5555.
  6. Numbers one through nine are always spelled out, unless you are talking about age or percentages. Numbers 10 and up are in numerical form.
  7. The word percent should be spelled out. Don’t use %.
  8. Titles of books, movies and publications are italicized, not underlined or in quotes.
  9. The NAMI Family-to-Family and Peer-to-Peer programs are always hyphenated except when appearing in Spanish (i.e., de Familia a Familia and de Persona a Persona).
  10. The word website is one word and is lowercase. Any singular word with “web” should be lowercase (e.g., webcast, webinar). The term Web is uppercase and remains uppercase when part of an item or description that is multiple words (e.g., Web page, Web feed).
