NAMI National Board of Directors
2005-2011
Guyla Daley, Treasurer
Guyla Daley became involved in NAMI in 1995 when her stepson, who is living with bipolar disorder, came to live with her. For four years, she has served her affiliate in South Carolina as both a program chair and as president. During this time, she tripled membership, added three housing units, quadrupled attendance at meetings, began Family-to-Family classes and support groups as well as formed a board of directors.
In 2000, Ms. Daley became president of NAMI SC at a time when it had no executive director, no money and no office. After six months, NAMI SC gained all three and has continued to expand with a current staff of five and was recognized in 2005 as outstanding state organization. In 2000 she received a commendation from NAMI SC “In recognition of extensive efforts, the unique and innovative solutions, the persistence in the face of certain failure, the tolerance and compassion for those helping and hindering and the success in turning NAMI SC around from despair to reestablishing an office and a respected identity in less than one year. We the board commend you, and we the board are forever grateful.”
Guyla has been a member of the board of Coastal Empire Community Mental Health Center since 1997 and served as chair for four years. She received the James B. Hilderbrand Board Service Award for dedicated outstanding service as a board member. In March 2003, she received the Louise R. Hassenplug Award for Outstanding Advocacy for People with Mental Illnesses and their families by SC Mental Health Commission. In 2006, NAMI Beaufort County recognized her “for her years of service to NAMI and her special efforts and leadership in breaking down barriers to treatment and recovery through support, education and advocacy” by establishing the Guyla Daley Advocacy and Leadership Award.
Ms. Daley has three adult children, three stepchildren, and 10 grandchildren. She graduated from the University of Georgia with an accounting degree, and worked in accounting and auditing for several years before moving to Hilton Head Island, S.C. For the past 26 years, she has owned and operated a Radio Shack dealership. She plants to retire, hopefully in the near future, to tree farm in Georgia where she was raised.
