NAMI Honors Exemplary Psychiatrists for Disaster Relief

May 25, 2006

Arlington, VA—NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) honored 16 physicians with "Exemplary Psychiatrists Awards" at the international American Psychiatric Association (APA) annual meeting this week, held in Toronto, Canada.

The awards are among the highest honors a psychiatrist can achieve, because nominations are made by the people who need their help the most—people living with mental illnesses, and their families.

The 2006 awards focus on psychiatrists who have made substantial contributions to state or local NAMI activities, and who demonstrate exemplary commitment and expertise in the area of disaster psychiatry, and post traumatic stress disorder.

"We recognize these exemplary psychiatrists for their contributions to disaster relief efforts nationwide," said NAMI national executive director Michael J. Fitzpatrick.

"Tragedies, such as hurricane Katrina, affect whole communities. These psychiatrists help people recover from such national tragedies, and from the personal tragedies people face in their daily lives."

The annual award program is supported by Eli Lilly & Co.
