NAMI StigmaBusters Special Alert: August 18, 2004

Contact: smarch@nami.org

"A FIERCE GOODBYE"

"A Fierce Goodbye" is a one-hour documentary about the impact of suicide on the family produced by Mennonite Media that will air on the Hallmark Channel this Sunday, August 22, at noon.

Some of our members who have seen an advance DVD of this film were offended by comments made by members of the clergy that call suicide a sin and are concerned that their views reinforce stigma. Others within NAMI who have viewed the DVD believe that the program actually helps to expose these issues.

NAMI staff, board members and NAMI FaithNet were all involved and had on-going dialogue with The Hallmark Channel and Mennonite Media.

Please watch "Fierce Goodbye" and send your comments to Hallmark and Mennonite Media as well as a copy to us.

This may also be an excellent opportunity to educate members of your local clergy about mental illness.

PLEASE SEND YOUR COMMENTS TO:
