STIGMABUSTERS UPDATE -- December 4, 2003

Good News!

Many thanks to all those StigmaBusters who contacted AOL.COM to express dismay over Netscape's "Insanity Calculator" on its Fun & Games Web site page yesterday.

Thanks to AOL.COM's Executive Office, the offensive "game" was removed from the Web site within two hours after initial complaints were heard. One AOL.COM representative in particular can be considered a hero--and probably deserves combat pay.

AOL.COM and Netscape are owned by Time-Warner, Inc.. Although AOL.COM was not responsible for selection of the Insanity Calculator, swift action cutting across corporate lines, led to a very positive result.

AOL.COM also is reviewing carefully and taking seriously the large volume of StigmaBuster messages received. A line of communication has been established for future dialogue. Such a high level of corporate education could not have been achieved without your efforts. It is a credit to you--as well as those company representatives who are taking the time to listen and understand.

No further action is needed. The email address in last night's special alert also should NOT be used again . It was supplied to NAMI on a one-time basis to help manage the controversy. Any future use on other matters will only interfere with proper assistance. Future questions or complaints involving AOL.COM products and services can be raised by contacting AOL.COM at 703-265-1000 (which is where we started). For mental health issues involving the company, please feel free also to contact NAMI Communications at bobc@nami.org or StigmaBusters at smarch@nami.org.

Please send short handwritten "thank you" note (or Christmas card) to AOL.COM's Chairman & CEO for the company's responsiveness to NAMI concerns, and goodwill for the New Year.

With more than 220,000 members and 1200 state and local affiliates, NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with severe mental illnesses.

Funding sources for NAMI programs include hundreds of state and local governments and foundations; tens of thousands of individual donors; and a growing number of corporations. NAMI's greatest asset, however, is its volunteers, who donate an estimated $135 million worth of their time each year to education, support and advocacy. NAMI does not endorse any specific medication or treatment.

Please forward this email if you know someone who might like to be added to our mailing list and join in speaking out against stigma. New subscribers to NAMIStigmaBusters Alerts may sign up at www.nami.org/subscribe. NAMI StigmaBuster Alerts are electronic newsletters provided free of charge as a public service. Contributions to support our work can be made on-line at www.nami.org/donate or via regular mail. Please make checks payable to NAMI and send to P.O.
