Free Teleconference on Stigma: Thursday, May 25
The SAMHSA Resource Center to Address Discrimination and Stigma Associated with Mental Illness (ADS Center) offers a free teleconference on Transition to Adulthood: Strategies for Overcoming Stigma and Achieving Positive Outcomes for Young Adults on Thursday, May 25, 2006, 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM (Eastern Time)
To register, please fill out the ADS Center form on-line. Registration closes at 5:00 p.m., Eastern time, on Wednesday, May 24, 2006.
StigmaBusting: NAMI Convention June 28-July 2
The early-bird discount registration deadline for NAMI’s annual convention in Washington, D.C is May 30th. Registration after that date must be conducted on-site
Discount airfare is available through American and United Airlines. There are several events that may be of special interest to StigmaBusters.
- Friday, June 30 (10:30-11:45 am) Workshop: The National Anti-Stigma Campaign
- Friday (1:45-4:30 pm) The New Generation at NAMI: Mental health problems young adults in universities face and the use of such programs as NAMIWalks that help to reach out to this population and combat stigma.
- Friday (7:30-9:30 pm): Special Film Event: A private screening for NAMI members of Canvas an inspiring, bittersweet film about one family’s struggle with schizophrenia, starring Emmy-winner Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos) and Academy Award-winner Marcia Gay Harden (Pollock). Inspired by a true story. Writer and director Joseph Greco, a NAMI member, will discuss the film.

Lobotomy Documentary: Stories Wanted
A PBS-TV documentary is being made for the American Experience series about Walter Freeman, the man who once promoted lobotomy as a treatment for mental illness. Historians and authors have written about when and where lobotomies were performed, but the producer wants to speak with people who actually experienced the procedure, or their family members, to discuss the effect on their lives.
