Yashi Brown

A passionate voice for mental health advocacy

Black Daisy in a White Limousine
"Black Daisy in a White Limousine: 77 Poems is an urban anthology of modern challenges, passages, spirituality, sexuality, love and family.

This provocative collection of contemporary poetry eloquently embraces a multitude of subjects from the coming of age experiences of a teenage girl to the inevitable loss of love and innocence of a young woman. Filled with courage, vision and whimsy, the reader gets the sense of a well worn journey that lands safely in a place of strength and hope."

They are a wonderful resource for helping families across the nation understand the care and patience involved when a family member has a mental health challenge...-Yashi Brown

Dust

Oh, highway, pass your dust on me
So, I may breathe the dreams you leave

Oh, grime, may your dirt
Shed from earth not my sweat
Which has no worth
I spin in circles chasing past rehearsals
Out spiraling every last whirlpool
A firecracker crackling too much
When just a little is enough

But you wait for me…
To catch my bearings
You out wait. Because I out grieve.

Yashi Brown is a poetess and philanthropist also born into the legendary Jackson family. Her book Black Daisy in a White Limousine: 77 Poems, a collection of poems eloquently chronicling life’s triumphs, challenges and issues affecting humanity, had its initial digital release by Periwinkle Press on Jan. 27, 2011.

Later, as a young adult Yashi began taking her poetry very seriously when she began experiencing the onset of significant emotional challenges in her early twenties. Her newly released book of 77 Poems engages the reader with heart felt intensity and a simple rhythmic style these very private moments. Always highly revealing Yashi expresses with plenty of introspection and opinionated observation her emotions, personal challenges, thoughts, and desires.

More recently she’s become a passionate and public advocate in the mental health community now successfully living with Bipolar Disorder Type I and continues to be an active force in providing awareness, recovery resources and busting the widespread stigma still very much rampant in our society.

She’s been very vocal in the media about stigma and provided recent press on mental health for CNN, Today Show, ABC and NBC news stations, Inside Edition, and Ebony/Jet publications to name a few. She is on the board for Project Return Peer Support Network (PRPSN) the largest and oldest peer support group in Los Angeles County and is a national advocate for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) the most formidable grassroots organization and preeminent voice on capitol health for mental health.

Currently developing her own documentary which chronicles her personal journey and shares some compelling arguments, Yashi demonstrates how a support system of family, friends, poetry are the keys to her success.

“NAMI – They are a wonderful resource for helping families across the nation understand the care and patience involved when a family member has a mental health challenge having more than 1100 affiliates. They have wonderful study groups and programs available for managing care and understanding how to navigate through the sometimes challenging mental health care system. There is a lot to consider when facing these situations and the right support is crucial.” -Yashi Brown

Yashi's poems are passionate and provocative. They include reflections about mental illness, but address themes to which just about everyone can relate. -Michael Fitzpatrick, Executive Director, NAMI
