Challenge the President’s Veto of Children’s Health Insurance

On October 18, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a motion to override President Bush’s veto of legislation renewing and improving the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The vote is expected to be very close. There is already sufficient support for the SCHIP in the Senate to override the veto, so the House vote is critical. The SCHIP bill includes several important provisions:
- A requirement for private-sector SCHIP plans to cover mental illness at parity with all other medical-surgical benefits.
- Funding to cover an additional 4 million eligible, but as yet unenrolled, children,
- A 6-month moratorium on regulations curbing rehabilitation services funded under Medicaid.
