Your Action Needed to Support Mental Illness Research and Services

October 15, 2007

This week the Senate is expected to take up legislation setting the budgets for mental illness research and services funding for FY 2008.  If passed, the bill (S 1710), would include increased funding for vital programs including, combatting chronic homelessness, suicide prevention and research into the causes and treatments of mental illness. This is $11 billion more funding than the President requested; as a result, President Bush has threatened a veto.

Act Now!

Contact your Senators today and urge them to pass S 1710, the FY 2008 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill and the proposed $43.4 million increase for mental illness research at the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) which would boost the NIMH budget to $1.436 billion. Increased funding will lead to better research into the causes and treatments of mental illness, as well as vital services like housing, suicide prevention and jail diversion!
