Texans Speak Out on Mental Health Budget Crisis
April 24, 2003 -- Nationally, as state budgets continue to cut back mental health services, a crisis is developing. Channel 8 News in Austin takes an in-depth look at the cost of such neglect and privation of treatment in Texas.
Excerpt: "The State of Texas ranks 47th in the nation when it comes to the amount of money per capita spent treating people with mental illness. While almost 550,000 Texans suffer from severe mental illness, only 30 percent, or less than 195,000, of those people received care. Many call that a mental health care crisis that's likely to get worse after this legislative session. Worse not just for the mentally ill but for taxpayers, too."
