Off to College Alone, Shadowed by Mental Illness

This 3,500 word article appeared on the front page of Friday’s New York Times. It is part of a series the Times is doing on children and mental health. This is the fourth in a series of articles about the increasing number of children whose problems are diagnosed as serious mental disorders. The earlier articles examined one family’s experience, the uncertainty of diagnosis, and the use of combinations of psychiatric drugs. Later articles will look at the role of parents.
For this article, reporter Lynette Clemetson worked with different NAMI families, and NAMI members Stacy Hollingsworth and Robert C. Haggard III about their experiences with mental illness. In this article, the students discuss the importance of NAMI in their recovery process, especially NAMI on Campus.
In the online version of the article, there is more information about NAMI’s campus programs and a video segment profiling Hollingsworth. When this appeared in the Times on Friday, it was the top of the "Most Emailed Articles" list.
