Restraint and Seclusion in Schools

According to USA Today, a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report reveals a series of alarming cases involving the restraint and seclusion of students with disabilities, including many with mental illness. Thousands of students are secluded or restrained in America's schools each year, including hundreds of cases where the practices are abusive or deadly.

The report notes that currently there is no federal system that regulates such practices in schools, unlike in hospitals and residential treatment centers, and teachers are often inadequately trained. State laws regulating the use of restraint and seclusion also vary.
