NAMI Columbus is a family-based support and advocacy organization. We are families andfriends of persons diagnosed with a mental illness. We assist families to develop skills andknowledge, thereby enabling them to cope more effectively and reduce their own stress. Wealso strive to improve the quality of life for those with a mental illness.
-
We work for procedures that provide hospitalization when it is needed.
-
We encourage legislation that assists the entire mental health service delivery system.
-
We strongly urge medical treatment instead of incarceration for those mentally ill persons who have committed non-violent violations.
-
We participate in actions to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness.
-
We advocate for changes that will improve the quality of life of our loved ones, including dispelling stigma and promoting mental illness as a treatable physical disorder like any other physical disorder (Click on Advocacy tab for current projects).

NAMI IS BUILT UPON FOUR CORNERSTONES
|
Support
Mental Illness can be devastating to the people with them and to their families as well. Support is an absolute necessity to get through the various stages of these illnesses.
|
We care because
we've been there!
|
Education
The public has many misconceptions about mental illnesses. One of these misconceptions is the basic definition of mental illness. NAMI bases the definition of mental illness on the latest research stating that serious mental illnesses are biological brain disorders.
|
|
Advocacy
Advocating for what is right and humane is undeniably important. NAMI has a national campaign underway to end discrimination and demand fair policies.
|
Research
Finally, thanks to organizations like NAMI, research is becoming an important tool in helping treat and care for people suffering from serious brain illnesses. Whether it's research on the brain itself, or discovering new drugs, more strides have been made in the last 10 years than in the last 100 years combined.
