YOU ARE NOT ALONE! IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH A SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS OR EXHIBITS SYMPTOMS OR BEHAVIORS THAT SUGGEST A POSSIBLE DIAGNOSIS, LET NAMI MISSISSIPPI ASSIST.  NAMI MISSISSIPPI WAS FOUNDED IN 1989 BY FAMILY MEMBERS OF PEOPLE WITH SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS.  WE ARE A NON-PROFIT, GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROVIDING SUPPORT, EDUCATION, AND ADVOCACY FOR CONSUMERS OF MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS.

SERVICES OFFERED BY NAMI MISSISSIPPI:

SUPPORT-- There are many affiliates and support groups state-wide where you can meet with others to share information and learn to cope.  People who participate in our organization learn that they do not have to struggle alone, and that they are not to blame for their illnesses or that of a loved one.  They find emotional support to share their experiences with others and to gain an understanding of mental illness and the services available.  A listing of support groups can be found by clicking on the about us/support link.

EDUCATION-- NAMI Mississippi works to foster greater public awareness of serious mental illness and to overcome stigma and misconceptions that are associated with mental illness.  We work to educate families, consumers, professionals and the general public.  Our educational efforts include:  our annual state conference, quarterly state newsletters, public speaking engagements, presentations at conferences, and science and treatment presentations. NAMI Mississippi also offers free educational classes including Family to Family classes, Peer to Peer, NAMI Basics, Provider Education, classes and/or In Our Own Voice presentations.  For more information about the free classes, or classes scheduled in your area, please click on the education link or call the NAMI Mississippi office.

ADVOCACY-- NAMI Mississippi advocates at both the state and national levels to protect the rights and promote the welfare of people with mental illness and their loved ones.  The goal is to ensure quality services and continuity of care.

RESEARCH-- We promote and support a national commitment to scientific research that continues to develop new medications and more effective treatment for mental illness and spread the word to consumers, family members, and providers when new development occur.

NETWORKING-- NAMI Mississippi will assist you and your loved ones in securing mental health services outside of the state by networking with other state NAMI organizations.

RESOURCE LIBRARY-- NAMI Mississippi's office in Jackson offers a library of videos, books, tapes, brochures, and other materials available to members and others seeking information.
