The Area's Voice on Mental Illness

What is NAMI Springfield?

NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness.  NAMI Springfield, founded in 1981, is the local affiliate for NAMI in the Springfield, Illinois, area.  We are a grassroots, not-for-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives of persons living with serious mental illness, and the lives of their families and friends.  We work together to meet the NAMI mission through support, education, advocacy, and research.

History:

NAMI Springfield is in its 27th year of serving people with mental illness and their families and friends.

Severe mental illnesses are catastrophic diseases with unknown causes and cures, but treatment can be effective.  They often strike young people in their most productive years and can devastate families emotionally, physically, and financially.  People with mental illness deserve appropriate care; but because of stigma and discrimination, many are not able to access needed treatment, services, education, housing, and employment opportunities.

NAMI Springfield is directed by an active Board of Directors.

Mission:

NAMI Springfield is dedicated to the task of eradicating mental illness and improving the lives of persons with mental illness and their families.

We welcome all who have felt alone because of a brain disorder within the family.  We hope you will join us in the rapidly growing network of people who are dedicated to the welfare of persons with a brain disorder and their families.
