MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK (MIAW) OCTOBER 5-11, 2008
National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Linn County
Join other people interested in mental health issues at a mental health resource fair followed by a panel event on bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder.
5:30 - 6:30 pm Mental Health Resource Fair: Agencies scheduled to participate include Tanager Place, Foundation 2, Horizons Counseling Center, and Linn County Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities.
5:30 - 6:30 pm Massage therapists from Dreamweaver Healing Arts will offer chair massages on a donation basis.
6:30 - 8:00 pm Panel event with consumers and professionals speaking on bipolar, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder. Consumers will speak about what it is like to live with the particular mental illnesses. Professionals will speak about treatment options available.
8:00 - 8:30 pm Question & Answer session with panel guests.

Recruiting Peer to Peer Mentors!
NAMI Iowa is actively seeking participants from Linn and Johnson Counties to participate in the NAMI Peer to Peer training. The training is open to consumers who wish to enhance and share their recovery skills and experiences with other peers. Upon completion, trainees are qualified to facilitate peer connections groups in their local communities. Linn County Visions For Tomorrow class is full! To get on the waiting list for the next class please contact the NAMI Linn County Resource Linn at 319-221-1184.
Visions For Tomorrow is a FREE course designed for parents and direct caregivers of children and teens with mental illness and/or behavior disorders. The 10-week course will educate parents on a variety of topics and provide support as families realize they are not alone in their journey with a child who has mental illness and/or behavior disorders. Classes run in Cedar Rapids April 10 - June 12, 2008. Space is limited and spots are filling quickly. Childcare reimbursement assistance is available if needed. NAMI, the acronym for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is a grassroots, self-help, education, support, and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with mental illness and their families.
