Welcome to NAMI West Houston

Welcom to NAMI West Houston!NAMI West Houston provides support, education and advocacy for families and individuals facing mental illness in the West Houston area. NAMI West Houston is a grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those struggling with mental illness. We have been active in Harris County since 1989.  NAMI West Houston is 100% volunteer.

With the support of our members and volunteers, NAMI West Houston holds monthly meetings, support groups and educational classes to help the public better understand how to cope with mental illness and begin the process of recovery.


Monthly Programs

NAMI West Houston holds monthly programs on the third Monday of every month.  We meet at 7:15 p.m. with social time and refreshments. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. and ends at 9:00 p.m.  If there are particular speakers or topics you are interested in, please let us know: 713-984-2538.

LOCATION!   Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive, Houston 77079, Room D126.  This is at the main church, on the south side of Memorial, between Beltway 8 and Wilcrest.   Park in the back at the east end of the Church.  Enter through double doors marked Education Center.  D-126 is on the right after the foyer.

Speakers:

  • September 15, 2008: Barbara Dawson of MHMRA, "MHMRA's New Crisis Procedures." 
  • October 20, 2008: Michael Fuller, M.D., "Choices Relapse Awareness/Prevention Strategies." A light dinner will be provided by Janssen, L.P.
  • November 17, 2008: Annlee Evans, Social Worker, "Caretaker Tips."
  • December 15, 2008: Holiday Celebration, pot luck dinner, bring salad or side dish, meat and dessert provided. Entertainment by Tidelanders

Education

Great Minds Think Alike is a new free education program for teenagers to learn about their mental illnesses and coping skills.  NAMI West Houston is considering offering this class.  Would you like to see this class offered in West Houston?  Contact Bonnie, bccord@swbell.net, 713-984-2538

Nami Walks

On May 2, 2009, the Houston area will have its fourth annual NAMIWalks at beautiful Sam Houston Park.  Our team is the NAMI West Houston BrainWaves.  We would love for you to join us!  Or to donate to show your support.  Just go to www.nami.org/namiwalks08/HOU/brainwaves to join the team.  Registration is free.  You can ask people to sponsor you for any amount.  Ten sponsors at $10 apiece will raise $100!  Since we are 100% volunteer, all funds received by NAMI West Houston go to support our classes, groups and programs.   The walk also raises awareness of mental health issues in Houston.  Please join us!   Questions?  contact Bonnie, 713-984-2538, bccord@swbell.net.
