In Loving Memory of Richard G. Brusch III

Rich was born on January 3, 1978. As a child he was smart, independent and strong willed. He was always a perfectionist and set extremely high standards for himself. Since he didn't like to play games that he couldn't win, we were very surprised when he told us that he wanted to play football for La Jolla High School. He liked a routine and transitions were hard for him. We saw the first signs of his anxiety when he moved from Elementary School to Middle School and again when he moved from Middle school to High School. In spite of his anxiety and eventual depression he was able to excel academically at high school, UC Berkeley, and UCSD. After 3 years of course work towards his Ph.D. in the Biomedical Sciences Department at UCSD, he decided to drop out because of his self-doubt fueled by the onset of serious anxiety and depression. After 7 years working as a scientist at the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF), Richard was overwhelmed by a deep clinical depression that proved resistant to medication and therapy. His last year was spent with his family seeking alternative treatments to relieve his constant pain and suffering. Thank you for donating to this great organization's effort to promote parity for mental illness research and treatment.
