Mental Health Parity

October 6, 2008

The New York Times reports that the landmark mental health parity law, signed by President Bush on Friday, will allow more than one-third of all Americans to receive equal coverage of mental and physical illnesses.

People living with mental illnesses historically have faced unfair discrimination in co-payments, doctor’s visits and hospital stays. The bipartisan law will require group health insurance plans to cover mental illnesses, such as major depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and substance abuse disorders on the same terms and conditions as other illnesses.

The law is projected to be effective for most health plans as of January 1, 2010.
