A message from the Team Captain:
Once again we are asking you to put on your walking shoes to support an event that is very important to us. On Sunday, October 5th, we will walk 3 miles as members of the NAMI Manchester Raisins (formerly Geri's Gems) team through downtown Concord, NH with hundreds of other walkers dedicated to eliminating the stigma, misinformation, and discrimination against mental illness. This is the sixth year of a growing nationwide event, NAMI Walks for the Recovery from Mental Illness. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the largest education, support and advocacy organization that serves the needs of all those who's lives are touched by these illnesses. Its goal is to eliminate stigma and raise much needed funds to enable us to provide the education, support, advocacy and other services that are the heart and soul of recovery and resilience in the face of these brain disorders. We've learned that our story is not uncommon. One out of every four people are affected by mental illness; 58 million Americans! For every 100 people in a given year, 1 will suffer from schizophrenia, 1 from bipolar disorder, 13 from anxiety disorders, and 5 from major depression. To add to the challenge, many will also suffer from addiction and substance abuse, which has a high level of co-occurrence with mental illnesses. Although treatment of mental illness has a higher success rate than many other chronic diseases, over 50% of those in need don't receive it. Support services, medical care, and insurance for those with mental illnesses are a far cry from those available for other medical illnesses. Undiagnosed and untreated brain disorders are devastating to families and an unnecessary drain on public resources, productivity, and human potential.
