Team Page: A.I.R. Attitudes In Reverse

Mental illness is like air. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. It is all around us. In March of 2006, my son Kenny was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety disorder. He met with discrimination due to his illness. He was embarrassed by his diagnosis, so he told his peers he had mono for over three years. He struggled and fought, but May 19, 2009, he lost that battle. After his death, our family was hit face-on with stigma, as Kenny died from the "wrong illness". A.I.R. was started because of all that happened to Kenny, both before and after he died; however, we know that this movement touches so many other lives. Many people from the Hamilton West School District will joining our team this year, as they too experienced a loss in 2009, Scott Powell. Another beautiful young woman from Cranbury lost her life recently. We will be walking for her as well. As a family, we knew that no child should have to face the same obstacles that Kenny battled, and no family should have to lose a child to a biological illness and battle stigma and judgement afterwards. No one should be embarrassed or afraid to ask for help for themselves or friends or family. Team Captain: Tricia Baker Organization: A.I.R.
