A message from the Team Captain:

Welcome to Ann Potocki's team's page. Our last update to this page was on April 7, 2008. All the latest news about our team will be included here. If you have not joined yet, click the button above to sign up now. We also welcome you to add to this team message. We'd love to share your thoughts with everyone.

Each of lost someone dear and beloved when on January 4, 2008, Ann Potocki lost her battle with depression. Many of us are searching for a way to make sense of this tragedy by doing something in memory of Ann. Our efforts will take many forms from taking time to learn more about depression to reaching out to someone suffering from an illness. Ann's sister-in-law, Ashley, came up with the idea to walk in memory of Ann. Ashley also thought that people might want to donate money in Ann's memory. We learned that NAMI.org (National Alliance on Mental Illness), is organizing a walk to raise money and awareness about our country's need for a world-class treatment and recovery system for people with mental illness. So here we are, forming a team to walk in memory of Ann. Please join us in San Diego this April 19, 2008 in person or in spirit. We're excited to learn that NAMI welcomes dogs on the walk since Ann adored her's and Joe's labrador, Sadie. So please feel free to bring your pet with you on April 19.

With the walk date fast approaching, we (Team Captains Ashley/Bernice Potocki & Cara Lyn Greco) have come to realize (thank you Ann's cousin, Molly Manning) that we need to clarify some of the details about the walk.

WALK DATE, LOCATION & PARKING:

Walk Date: April 19, 2008.

Location: 6th / Quince / Balboa; Balboa Park, San Diego

Parking: Parking can be a challenge so give yourself plenty of time to find a space. Please watch for signs. Some of the streets only allow for 2 hour parking.

WALK START TIME: From 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. there will be a welcome address from Shannon Jaccard, the NAMI San Diego Walk Manager. Shannon’s welcome will be followed by a 10 minute opening address from NAMI’s Honorary Chair, Geni Cavitt from Channel 10. Then, there will be a 10 minute warm up. At exactly 8:30 a.m. the walk will begin.

REGISTERING FOR THE WALK: We’ll have a Team Table set up next to the Performance/Speech stage. There will be a Team Ann Potocki banner on the table so you’ll know where to find our group. You don’t need to worry about registration because Cara Lyn will have gone to the NAMI offices Thursday, the week of the walk, to register our team. She'll pick up walker identification tags and t-shirts to give to you at the walk, before it starts. Everyone will turn their outstanding checks and donations to Cara Lyn or Ashley at the Team Table. If you ordered a T-Shirt for delivery at the walk, Ashley will give it to you at the table.

AFTER THE WALK: Please make your way back to the Team Ann Potocki table for some beverages, fruit and other assorted munchies. At this point, it’ll be somewhere between 9:15 and 9:45 a.m. Please stop by the table after the walk even if it’s just for a few moments. Ann’s husband, friends and family want to thank you personally for your generous contribution of time and effort. San Diego’s Gay Men Chorus will perform at that time. There will also be over 40 organizations passing out their information and a couple of food vendors and kids activities.

WALK DISTANCE: The total walk distance is 5 kilometers (3.2 miles) but there is an optional turn around at the 2.5 kilometer (1.6 mile) mark for those of us who don’t feel up to the entire walk. And for the runners in the group, you can do the course 2 times to make the walk a 10k! Last, we're really excited for the dog lovers in our group. If you like, your pet(s) can join us on the walk.

Last but not least, we've created a website in Ann's memory at http://www.annpotocki.com. Please visit the Guest Book. You’ll be glad you took the time to read the memories written there.

In closing, one of the reasons we selected the NAMI.org walk is because it's easy to make donations to a very worthy cause. For many of us, this is how we will have another chance to thank Ann for her presence in our lives. The donations will go to NAMI. It's our hope that the stigma associated with mental illness will be eradicated and better support systems will be developed to help people suffering from a mental illness.

You can donate directly to NAMI.org or to any walker on our team. Donating through the website is easy, fast and secure. Any amount will make a difference for NAMI and maybe even save a life.

We think we can speak for our entire team, Ann's husband Joe, Ann's family, her friends and our team - we appreciate your donations. Thank you for your support.

Bless you Annie wherever you are.

Ashley & Cara Lyn
