A message from Shannon:
Dear Family and Friends,
I can’t believe it is that time of year again when NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) in San Diego County puts on a walk that is not just a fundraiser for the many important programs they run, but also a huge stigma buster. It is a morning that seems almost magical with over 1500 people coming together at Balboa Park not ashamed of mental illness but proud to be fighting for a cause that is too often overlooked.
You might be asking why I am apart of this walk (actually I am the Walk Manager)! Many of you probably know. It is because of the young man in this picture. He is my brother and only sibling. Growing up, I am the one who taught him to ride a bike, tie his shoe, and shield him from monsters in his closet. Of course we had the normal sibling rivalry but we were each other’s companions.
Years after this picture was taken his brain started to struggle. For the past six years, we have fought hard with many barriers to help him recover. One of the biggest barriers is the lack of education in the community on mental illness, which is one of the main missions of NAMI and the reason we as a family support this cause. My brother has to be one of the bravest persons I know. Each day he fights to fit in, to understand what is happening to him, and to overcome the loss he has experienced due to his illness, as does the rest of my family.
The walk is being held, Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Balboa Park on 6th Ave and Quince St.
Hope to see you there in only 31 days!
All my best and thank you,
Shannon
