Dear friends, family, and loved one's: Well, it's that time again! I am joining an event that focuses on a cause dear and near to my heart, Mental Illness. NAMIWalks for the Mind of America is very important and exciting to me, it is NAMI's signature walkathon event and it is being held in San Diego, CA at Balboa Park: 6th / Quince / Balboa on April 19, 2008. You might ask yourselves some questions. What does NAMI stand for? What do they do? Why so much devotion? What IS a Mental Illness? Well, let me help clear up a few questions. NAMI stands for National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI provides support, education, advocacy and many other things for people who have a mental illness AND their friends and family. My devotion to NAMI has grown exponentially from the moment I first walked in the doors. I have many friends who have the ups and downs of a mental illness. Mental illnesses are brain disorders and are just like any illness such as: diabetes, or cancer. You can't ask a diabetic person to just "snap out" of their diabetes. Mental illnesses include disorders such as: Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive, Anxiety and Panic, etc. Most of the time when I talk to somebody about NAMI I am most likely to hear a: "I have a son" or "I have sibling" or "I have a friend", and the list goes on. This year I am unable to physically walk the route, but have just as much enthusiasm to join over 12,000 people who gather to help raise money for the programs that NAMI offers free of cost to all of those who need them, make a stand to end the stigma that surrounds mental illness, and to build awareness of the fact that the mental health system in this country needs to be improved. My team is called The Bench Warmers! =-) I would like to ask you to come and walk with me or to donate to support my participation in this great event.
