A message from Jim:

Welcome to my personal web page for NAMIWalks for the Mind of America. I have created this fundraising page because NAMI, and the work they do, is very important to me. We walk because of the devastating impact that mental illness has had on our family. First was a sister, a lovely talented lady who committed suicide in 1961. Then a very talented brother suffering from Bipolar Disorder, undiagnosed until he was in his fifties. Then a son aged 44, with the onset of Schizophrenia at age 18, diagnosed at age 21, not accepting treatment until 30. In the meantime spending 3 years on the streets. Fortunately, now working part time for the last 12 years, living on his own with a Section 8 HUD Housing Certificate. On top of this, 2 nephews both suffering with Bi-polar Disorder. This is just a brief family history. As active members of NAMI for the last 18 years, and Family to Family teachers for the last 7 years, we have become acutely aware of the widespread impact of undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. The stigma attached to the diagnoses is such a formidable barrier to treatment that we really don't have any idea of the scale of the undiagnosed and untreated, but can only assume that it is massive. We do know that the negative impact, both emotionally and financially, on society is devastating in its proportions. As we have taught the Family to Family course (a 12 week course), we have watched the empowering of family members, the diminishing of tension and the profound relief of families learning in multiple ways how to help their loved one, after years of distress and uncertainty. NAMIWALKS gives us an opportunity to put on display to the public the face of the families and their loved ones with the illnesses who have the courage to deal with these illnesses in the open, as well as to raise funds to further the cause of educating the general public as to the nature and scale of these illnesses. We are proud members of the NAMIWALKS community. Donating to me through this page is easy, fast and secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me. Any amount will make a difference for NAMI, but please try to give generously.

Both NAMI and I appreciate your donation. Thank you for your support.
