Welcome to my personal web page for the 2008 NAMIWalks for the Mind of America. I have created this fundraising page because NAMI, and the work they do, has been very important to me and my family.
I joined NAMI in 1990 and I have seen so many advances in these 18 years. I realized today that NONE of our wonderful education programs existed at that time. I had the privilege of being in the first group of teachers trained to present the 12 week Family to Family class. When I am not teaching my own class, I am available to substitute for other teachers as needed. Family to Family is only one of several targeted free education programs that are provided by NAMI volunteers. A great new program is called "Parents and Teachers as Allies." It is designed to educate local parents and school staff about mental illness in children, the challenges that families face and how schools can help.
While all our education programs are free for attendees and are taught by volunteers, it takes money to train those teachers and print the materials that those attending will receive. It costs nearly $50 for each manual given to every person attending the Family to Family course. I walk and raise money for NAMI to support these valuable programs because they change lives and save lives. Our office phones ring every day with people in crisis seeking information, education and support.
