A message from Geraldine:
You may not know that fifteen years ago we admitted our son Chris, then 24, to the psychiatric unit of the Anna Jacques Hospital in Methuen. We’ll never forget what it was like to leave him in a locked facility that night, wondering how this could happen to our son, a past dean’s list student at Northeastern University, a hard worker, and a great snowboarder. We came to learn in the next weeks and months about an illness of which we were totally unfamiliar. Christopher was diagnosed with a severe and persistent mental illness. In our efforts to help our family survive, we learned about an organization called the National Alliance on Mental Illness, an organization that has had a profound impact on our family. We have also learned that our story is just one of so many (did you know that one in four families is affected by a serious mental illness?) – in short, we have become advocates for those who have been affected by mental illness. Over the past few years it has become “acceptable” to say one suffers from depression or bipolar disorder or one’s child has ADHD. Hopefully, someday, all mental illnesses will be treated like any other illness. On October 5th, NAMI NH will be holding its 6th annual walk (5K, 3.2 miles) which will start at New Hampshire Hospital on S. Fruit St. in Concord at 2:00 p.m.. Our team, the NAMI Manchester Raisins (formerly Geri's Gems) will be walking. In the past our team has always been one the largest and biggest teams in the state. Its goal is to eliminate stigma and raise much needed funds to enable us to provide the education, support, advocacy and other services that are the heart and soul of recovery and resilience in the face of these brain disorders There is no registration fee and walkers are asked to seek pledges.
If possible, you could send a donation but we also are pleased if you could just walk with us to help us fight the stigma of mental illness. You’ll love our new “RAISIN” tee shirts – for raisin’ awareness and raisin’ funds for those with brain disorders.
