NAMI Submission Guidelines

The Advocate is the flagship vehicle for public communication from NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It offers inspirational, practical and useful information for individuals living with mental illness, families affected by mental illness, mental health care providers, research professionals and advocates.

Before submitting your article, please check the NAMI Style Guide to ensure your article follows the Guide.

Publishing

The Advocate is published three times per year in print. NAMI publishes articles weekly on its homepage and in its digital newsletter, NAMI Now.

NAMI also encourages individuals to share their stories of hope and recovery via video or text in the You Are Not Alone campaign.

Readership

Simple, clear language is essential to addressing the broad demographic of NAMI’s membership and readership base. All ages, backgrounds and education levels should be kept in mind. Professionals submitting articles should keep in mind that medical terms need to be explained, both for our editors and our readers.

What We’re Looking For

We select articles that will appeal to persons living with mental illness as well family members and friends of those living with mental illness. NAMI members, as well as health care professionals and experts in the field of mental illness, are encouraged to submit articles, including personal stories. These articles must be positive, informative and pertinent to NAMI members. We do not accept fiction, poetry, artwork or product promotions or endorsements.

Rights & Compensation

NAMI Advocate does not offer compensation for articles.

When you submit your article to NAMI, it is understood you are granting NAMI full, exclusive rights—mechanical, distribution, broadcasting and performing rights as well as the right to create derivative works in print, digital media and online. All copyright ownership rests with NAMI.

NAMI reserves to right to edit all submissions for length, accuracy and style.

Specifics

All accepted articles must be accompanied by the author’s name, city/state, e-mail or Web site and NAMI chapter of affiliation, if applicable. Author bios, if you wish to submit one, should be one to three lines of type (approximately 50 words). A contact e-mail and / or URL will be included if provided and deemed appropriate.

Please submit articles at least two months in advance of publication date for regular submissions, four months in advance for seasonal pieces. Reviewing takes approximately two weeks. You will be contacted if your work has been accepted. Due to the volume of submissions NAMI receives, no phone calls or personal e-mails please.

Books and Film

Submissions will be considered for news and educational interest. Please include a one sheet, press release, letter of interest and/or two review copies of your work. NAMI cannot help authors find agents or publishers, fund projects, or purchase, sell or distribute books and DVDs.
