NAMI Opposes the ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017

Feb 14, 2018

The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote Thursday, Feb. 15 on H.R. 620, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Education and Reform Act of 2017. This bill would weaken the ADA, a law that ensures people with disabilities, including mental illness, have equal access to all areas of public life.

Mary Giliberti, NAMI's CEO, adressed the importance of opposing this bill by sending a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

In this letter, she explains that the H.R. 620 would make it harder for people with disabilities to access public accommodations like stores, restaurants, hotels and more. Additionally, Giliberti states that The ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017 would remove incentives for businesses to be accessible for people with disabilities and shift the burden of ADA compliance from businesses to people.

Read the letter and help NAMI oppose this bill by writing to your representative.
