NAMI seeks diversity and inclusion in our Convention offerings.  In support of this goal, we ask that you address how diversity, equity and inclusion are incorporated in your workshop proposal.

This year’s convention tracks focus on three types of change.

  • Personal Change – NAMI empowers individuals and families to seek help and support, find community and engage in personal advocacy. Relevant submission in this category might address programs, practices or research that helps individuals identify early symptoms, learn treatment options, and find support groups, education programs or social services.
  • Societal Change – NAMI raises awareness of mental illness both individually and throughout society, including among diverse cultures. Relevant submissions in this category might address public awareness efforts social media and other community outreach program that help shift societal perceptions and increase recognition of mental illness as a health condition like any other.
  • Systems Change – NAMI advocates, leads and invests in accelerating innovation in our healthcare, education and justice systems. Relevant submissions in this category might address state or national public policy initiatives, education of health care professionals, and promising programs or interventions that are helping people with mental health conditions better access help or achieve better health or quality of life.

2019 NAMI National Convention: Our Movement, Our Moment

The Convention theme, Our Movement, Our Moment, builds momentum around NAMI’s new strategic priorities and challenges everyone to engage in the NAMI movement.

The Focus

NAMI seeks diversity and inclusion in our Convention offerings.  In support of this goal, we ask that you address how diversity, equity and inclusion are incorporated in your workshop proposal.

The impact of mental illness sets people and their families on a journey through different levels of understanding and engagement. NAMI’s convention tracks represent these levels.

NAMI seeks dynamic presentations that align with the following tracks:

Session Format

Workshop

  • 75-minute traditional session
  • Theater-style seating, head table for 4 with podium
  • Meeting room capacity varies
  • LCD projector, screen, podium mic and wireless internet provided
  • Maximum of four presenters
  • Discounted speaker registration

Flash Session

  • 30-minute concise presentation focused on a topic or concept
  • Designated area in Exhibit Hall with riser and podium for presenter(s)
  • Theater seating for 30 attendees
  • LCD projector, screen, podium mic and wireless internet provided
  • Discounted speaker registration

Movie or Documentary

  • 30 to 90-minute professionally produced film
  • Respectful of potential triggers
  • Screening would be supported by an expert panel, documentary’s subject or lead actors

Successful submissions must:

  • Align with one or more convention tracks
  • Be presented by no more than four presenters
  • Be interactive
  • Leave time for questions and answers
  • Offer tangible, take-home ideas or skills

Submission Guidelines

All submission must be made using the online webform.  Applicants must submit all required information for each speaker on the proposal. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

NAMI reserves the right to edit or modify all session descriptions for inclusion in convention materials.

Review and Selection

Due to the limited number of workshops, the selection process is very competitive. Proposals are reviewed and rated a team of subject matter experts. All convention final program decisions are at the discretion of NAMI.

PLEASE NOTE:  All Workshop and Flash Session presenters are eligible for an exclusive speaker registration rate. Travel-related expenses including transportation and hotel accommodations are not covered or reimbursable.

Plenary sessions, films, NAMI Talks, Research Updates, Major Topic Symposium, Author Showcases will be determined solely by NAMI.

NAMI staff will not provide guidance or suggestions to individual submitters during the submission period.

Notification

All submitters will be notified about the status of their submission by February 25, 2019.

Accepted Proposals

All accepted Workshop and Flash Session proposals will entitle presenters to an exclusive speaker registration rate. NAMI will arrange for a discounted room block at the Hyatt Regency Seattle for all convention attendees. Discounted rooms are limited, so plan to register early and reserve your room.

NAMI does not cover or reimburse any travel-related expenses including transportation and hotel accommodations.
