About Us

Located in Stamford, CT, NAMI Southwest CT and its dedicated volunteers work together to raise awareness and provide essential mental health education, advocacy and support group programs. NAMI Southwest CT is a nonprofit, grassroots organization that addresses the needs of the local community, helping families and individuals affected by mental illness while striving to replace stigma with understanding.

The Stamford/Greenwich affiliate was established following the 1984 founding of NAMI-CT.  One of its initial principals was Dee Murdoch, now a resident of Torrington, CT.  In 1999, Loretta E. Duvall, a Greenwich resident, became its president and led the affiliate with energy and dedication for seven years.  During this time her accomplishments in advocacy and reducing stigma were recognized by NAMI-CT, the American Psychiatric Association and other organizations.  During her stewardship, the affiliate grew organizationally, gaining a set of bylaws and a board of directors in 2002.

In July of 2014 NAMI Stamford Greenwich changed its name to NAMI Southwest CT to reflect the fact that we serve the towns of Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk, Redding, Ridgefield, Westport, Weston, and Wilton.

Our affiliate has trained facilitators who lead family support groups in the local hospitals and community spaces as well as support groups for parents and caregivers of children with mental health issues each month. We offer support in Spanish and a NAMI Connection group for those in recovery. We sponsor NAMI educational programs locally, including the 12-week Family-to-Family course and NAMI Basics.
