Candidate Narrative

From: Jim Reiser 34 years ago a volunteer affiliate in Marietta Georgia saved me from abandoning my brother. My NAMI passion derives from their support and advice. I am running for re-election to continue to be the advocate on the Board for local affiliates, especially volunteer run. Almost half of the 600 affiliates are volunteer run. I believe volunteers are the heart and muscle of our movement. Affiliates span a wide range of financial, programmatic, and volunteer strength. NAMI National is blessed with both strong financial health and an expert staff and could do more to strengthen the field and thereby the Alliance. First off, National could provide financial incentives to volunteer run and other in-need affiliates to continue to provide certified education and support to those in need. As the Alliance advances to a more Federated System, a policy of revenue sharing should be established. Donors should have the opportunity to earmark part of their national donation for their local NSO or affiliate. This policy will help mitigate the unfortunate mistrust in the field. The excellent NAMI IT Dept. should continue to improve our communication systems, Virtual TT, and seminars. Virtual training could be expanded to include best practices in fundraising and in grant-writing. Lastly, scientific research has repeatedly shown the critical value of intensive follow-up coverage (family psycho-ed. & ACT) in preventing psychotic relapses. NAMI should lead a national initiative to certify recovered peers as intensive case managers. If elected, I welcome your input.

I have organized buses of families, peers, and providers to attend mental health days in the state capitals of Albany, NY (while on NYC Board) 1996,97,98 Buses of same constituency in Tallahassee, Florida 2017-18 (while on Gainesville board) Presented testimony to City of Gainesville 2016,17 and Alachua County 2018, 22.

While on NAMI New York City Metro Board was able to move board to appeal to NY state office of Mental Health to include Family Psycho-education as “Preferred Intervention”. 1998 While on Georgia Board, Georgia governor appointed me to State Committee to Revamp Georgia Dept of Mental Health. 1990-92.
