NAMI Applauds NFL's Brandon Marshall for Wearing Pink and Green in Game between Chicago Bears and New York Giants

Oct 10 2013

ARLINGTON, Va ., Oct. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Michael J. Fitzpatrick, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness ( NAMI) has released the following statement about Brandon Marshall and tonight's National Football League (NFL) game, between the Chicago Bears and New York Giants:

"NAMI applauds Brandon Marshall's leadership in raising public awareness about both breast cancer and mental illness.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Oct. 6-12 is Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW).

Tonight's football game between the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants also takes place on both National Depression Screening Day and World Mental Health Day.

In observance of the convergence with tonight's game, Brandon intends to wear pink cleats with green laces.

Pink goes with green and green goes with pink.

It is entirely appropriate to blend both colors in order to raise awareness about life-threatening diseases that sadly often coincide.

Millions of women who develop breast cancer unfortunately often also confront major depression or anxiety as a consequence. Those conditions require own integrated treatment and it is important to stay alert to their symptoms. Partners and caregivers of women who confront breast cancer also run greater risks of mood disorders.

NAMI encourages everyone to wear pink and green in watching the game and hopes that sports media will also use the opportunity to help raise awareness about two serious public health challenges."
