He is also a member of NAMI Hall (Georgia), where he has helped with their social media efforts. While in Georgia, he led connection support groups. He taught NAMI Smarts and advocated for mental health parity with legislators at the Capitol. He also spoke at conferences, high schools, middle schools, and churches through Ending the Silence and In Our Own Voice. He served on the board of NAMI Broward County for four years when he moved to Florida.
McAfee first learned about NAMI through a health fair that promoted mental well-being he worked in the national office of Mental Health America, where he was a navigator helping sign people up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. He now focuses his efforts on public speaking and workshops through McAdemic Coaching (https://www.benjaminmcafee.com/).
McAfee has been recognized and was invited to be part of a mental health listening tour with Demi Lovato. He was featured in the award-winning BP magazine, a leading publication for bipolar disorder. He also received an honorable mention through Lime Connect’s In the Limelight competition, in which he was awarded a prize sponsored by Google.
McAfee earned his undergraduate degree at Georgetown University and received a Master’s in Public Health at Emory University. He is currently, a doctoral candidate at Loma Linda University, McAfee is pursuing his Doctorate in Health Education with a concentration in Wellness Coaching.
