For this new year, we should all think more carefully about how to set ourselves up for success.
Even though jails function as a hidden part of our health systems, they are not held to the same standard of quality care that we expect from health providers.
Those with mental illness are overrepresented in solitary confinement, despite the vulnerability and threats to the mental health of those incarcerated.
However frustrating it was to hear that others struggle with similar challenges, I now know that frustration points to a more important truth.
Many factors are contributing to worsening mental health and suicidality within the LGBTQ+ community, and yet, people who identify as LGBTQ+ face many additional challenges in accessing mental health care.
We helped change attitudes and laws. And we discovered the transformative, collective power in the simple act of coming out.
With the right treatment in place, I was able to acknowledge and validate my pain.
