In March NAMI recognized National Criminal Justice Month, and guest host Hannah Wesolowski, NAMI’s Chief Advocacy Officer, sat down to chat with Bureau of Justice Assistance Director Karhlton Moore about criminal justice and mental health. Tune in to hear about how the Bureau of Justice Assistance is supporting innovation in communities across the country through collaboration between criminal justice systems and mental health organizations. He will also share insights about how 988 is playing a role in justice system diversion and the hope he sees visiting communities across the country.

Karhlton F. Moore

Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance at the U.S. Department of Justice

Karhlton F. Moore is the Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) at the U.S. Department of Justice. He was appointed by President Biden to lead BJA in 2022.

Prior to joining BJA, Karhlton served as the Executive Director of Ohio’s Office of Criminal Justice Services where he oversaw state and federal grants for law enforcement, victim assistance, juvenile justice, crime prevention courts, anti-trafficking efforts, reentry, corrections programs and traffic safety. In that role, he led Ohio’s grantmaking operations, advising the governor and the director of the Department of Public Safety on criminal justice strategies. He also served as the facilitator for former Ohio Governor John Kasich’s Task Force on Community-Police Relations, precursor of the Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board, a multi-disciplinary panel that establishes standards for law enforcement agencies as part of the state’s effort to strengthen community-police relations.

Karhlton also served on the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) advisory council and executive committee and was president of NCJA’s board of directors. He also served on the steering committee of the Justice Counts initiative.

As Chief Advocacy Officer, Hannah leads the Government Relations, Policy and Advocacy team at NAMI. Under her leadership the team works with advocates, partners, NAMI leaders and policymakers to enact policy change that will improve the lives of all people affected by mental health conditions.

Hannah came to NAMI in 2017 with more than a decade of experience in advocacy. She serves as a member of NAMI’s Executive Team and is a frequent NAMI spokesperson on access to mental health care, justice system diversion and 988 and crisis response, among other topics.

Hannah grew up in New Hampshire and has a BA from New York University, where she also earned an MPA from NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
