Dr. Sheldon A. Jacobs

Dr. Sheldon A. Jacobs

Dr. Sheldon A. Jacobs has worked extensively with individuals experiencing difficulties with various life transitions, juvenile probationers, severely emotionally disturbed children, chemical dependency populations, college students, first responders, professional athletes (most recently the Las Vegas Raiders), and individuals experiencing mild to severe mental health challenges. While serving these populations, Dr. Jacobs fulfills a multitude of job duties such as providing individual, group, and family therapy. Aside from the marriage and family therapy field, his specific interests fall within the sports and forensic psychology sub-fields.

Dr. Jacobs was appointed by Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak in July 2019 to serve on the State of Nevada Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapists and Clinical Professional Counselors. In June 2022, he was elected to the Board of Directors for NAMI National, which made him the first Nevadan to ever serve on the national board. He was elected to the NAMI National executive committee as the secretary. He founded and chairs a coalition that is comprised of mental health professionals that addresses the shortage of mental health providers of color in Southern Nevada. In this role, he has created a pipeline for students of color to enter the field of mental health at the high school and college levels. The coalition also provides outreach efforts to underserved and underrepresented communities of color to increase awareness and accessibility to services.

Dr. Jacobs has published several professional journal articles and released his highly anticipated memoir in November 2020, titled “48: An experiential memoir on homelessness” where he went undercover as a homeless man for 48 hours in downtown Las Vegas to raise awareness for homelessness and mental health. More than half of the proceeds from book sales have gone to various charities. In March 2023, Dr. Jacobs was selected by the Las Vegas Review Journal to have his own column titled “Mental Health Matters.”

He regularly speaks in the media, at conferences, summits, churches, schools, and community events about mental health. Dr. Jacobs’ ultimate goal is to normalize mental health so that more underrepresented communities feel comfortable accessing services. He also likes to speak to marginalized groups about his journey and all the obstacles he’s had to overcome to experience success. Due to his speaking and advocacy efforts, Dr. Jacobs has received awards and recognition at the local, state, and national level.
